'4,000 Jews Stayed Home': 9/11 Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories
The claim
“4,000 Jews were forewarned to skip work at the World Trade Center on 9/11, 'dancing Israelis' proved foreknowledge, and Israel's Mossad carried out the attacks.”
Demonstrably invented: a forged document, a fictitious event, an accusation refuted by direct evidence.
Historical context
Within days of September 11, 2001, Hezbollah's Al-Manar television broadcast the invented claim that 4,000 Israelis (quickly mutated to 'Jews') failed to report to work at the World Trade Center, implying Israeli foreknowledge. The figure was twisted from an Israeli government estimate of roughly 4,000 Israelis believed to be in the New York area generally. Companion myths — five Israelis seen filming the attacks ('dancing Israelis') as proof of Mossad involvement, or that Larry Silverstein and Jewish-owned firms profited — spread across the Middle East, far-right and 9/11 'truther' networks, and persist in social-media and state propaganda. The libel fueled antisemitic violence and harassment worldwide during the 2000s and remains a staple of both jihadist and white-supremacist discourse, resurging after every Middle East crisis.
The debunking
The claim collapses against the victim data: Jews died on 9/11 in numbers proportional to or above their share of the New York workforce — roughly 10–15 percent of the approximately 2,750 World Trade Center victims (several hundred people), with Jewish victims also among those killed on the planes and at the Pentagon (about five Israeli citizens died in the attacks). Snopes traced the '4,000' figure to a September 12, 2001 Jerusalem Post report that the Israeli Foreign Ministry had collected the names of about 4,000 Israelis believed to be in the areas of the WTC and Pentagon — a count of worried families' inquiries, not employees, which Al-Manar inverted into absence and foreknowledge. The five Israelis detained after being seen photographing the burning towers were investigated by the FBI, found to have no foreknowledge or involvement, and deported for visa violations; the 9/11 Commission's exhaustive investigation established al-Qaeda's sole responsibility, documenting the plot from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's proposal through the hijackers' financing. ADL's 2003 study 'Unraveling Anti-Semitic 9/11 Conspiracy Theories' documents the libel's manufacture and diffusion, noting it grafts the 'warned in advance' motif onto centuries-old claims of Jewish treachery.

The myth presumes Jewish Americans would receive and conceal a Mossad warning, treating every Jew as a secret agent of Jewish/Israeli interests rather than a loyal citizen — the dual-loyalty charge in catastrophic form.
Recasts a documented al-Qaeda attack as a hidden Jewish operation staged to manipulate world events — the standard conspiracist move of attributing any historical rupture to secret Jewish agency, here exported globally by Al-Manar within days.
