The Judeo-Bolshevism Myth

The claim

Communism is a Jewish invention and instrument, and Bolshevik revolution is the Jewish world conspiracy in action.

An unfalsifiable narrative of hidden coordinated Jewish power, contradicted by the documented record.

Historical context

Born amid the Russian Revolution and civil war, the myth fused the visibility of some Jewish-born revolutionaries (Trotsky, Zinoviev) with the older conspiracy narrative: Bolshevism was 'really' Jewish. White armies massacred tens of thousands of Jews in Ukraine in 1918–1921 under this banner; émigrés carried the Protocols and the myth westward, where it shaped interwar politics from Hungary to Britain. Paul Hanebrink's 'A Specter Haunting Europe' (2018) shows how the 'Judeo-Bolshevik' became a pan-European panic figure. For the Nazis it was core doctrine: the 1941 invasion of the USSR was framed as a war of annihilation against 'Jewish Bolshevism,' the Commissar Order and Einsatzgruppen massacres (Babi Yar) were justified by it, and Jeffrey Herf shows it anchored wartime propaganda for the Final Solution.

The debunking

The equation of Jews with communism fails statistically, politically, and theologically. Jews were never more than a small minority of Bolsheviks—around 5 percent of party members in 1917—and Jewish-born leaders like Trotsky explicitly renounced Jewish identity, while the overwhelming majority of Russian Jews supported non-Bolshevik parties (the Bund, Zionists, liberals) or none; the most religious Jews opposed an atheist movement that criminalized their way of life. The Soviet regime suppressed Judaism—closing synagogues, banning Hebrew education, persecuting Zionism—and under Stalin turned to overt antisemitic purges (the murder of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, the Doctors' Plot), an absurd outcome for a supposedly Jewish-run state. Hanebrink's scholarship demonstrates that 'Judeo-Bolshevism' was a constructed political weapon: its content shifted with each user's needs, from Polish border wars to Hungarian counter-revolution to Nazi crusade rhetoric, precisely because it described an imagined enemy rather than a real constituency. The myth's measurable products were atrocities against Jews—the civil-war pogroms (estimates of 50,000–200,000 killed) and the Holocaust on Soviet soil, where over a million Jewish civilians, not 'commissars,' were shot. Historians (Hanebrink; Herf; USHMM) uniformly classify Judeo-Bolshevism as an antisemitic fiction grafted onto real revolutionary upheaval.

Descends from

  • descends fromThe Myth of the Jewish World ConspiracyAntisemitismc. 1790s–present

Revolution was slotted into the pre-existing plot narrative: Bolshevism became the latest mask of the imagined Jewish bid for world power.

  • descends fromThe Protocols of the Elders of ZionAntisemitism1903–present

After 1917 the Protocols were marketed as 'prophecy fulfilled,' with the Russian Revolution cited as proof of the Elders' plan; White émigrés spread both together.

Lives on as

  • The Slánský TrialAntizionism1952

Inversion of the older myth: where the right cast Jews as the secret masters of communism, Stalinist courts cast Jewish communists as secret enemies of it — the conspiratorial Jew remains constant.

  • Inherits the interwar 'orchestrated subversion' structure of Judeo-Bolshevism — Jews as masterminds of a movement destroying the nation from within — swapping communist revolution for engineered immigration as the instrument of destruction.

  • The 'Cultural Marxism' Conspiracy TheoryAntisemitism1990s–present

Direct lineal descendant: the Nazi-era 'Kulturbolschewismus' smear of Jewish intellectuals as cultural destroyers was revived nearly verbatim, with 'Frankfurt School' substituted for 'Jewish Bolsheviks' as the named cadre — a genealogy documented by Moyn and Braune.
