Historical context
Conspiracy theories cast Soros — a Holocaust survivor and philanthropist — as the secret financier of migrant caravans, antifa, Black Lives Matter protests, and 'globalist' subversion. The narrative recycles the Rothschild myth and the Protocols' structure: one rich Jew secretly directing world events. Hungary's Fidesz government ran a state-funded campaign in 2017–18 ('Don't let Soros have the last laugh' billboards, the 'Stop Soros' laws), which Hungarian Jewish organizations and Human Rights Watch condemned as antisemitic; billboards were defaced with 'stinking Jew' graffiti. In October 2018 the trope had violent consequences: the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter and the MAGA-bomber Cesar Sayoc (who mailed Soros a pipe bomb) both embraced Soros-as-puppet-master claims about the migrant caravan.
The debunking
Fact-checkers and researchers have repeatedly found no evidence for the core claims: AP, Reuters and others debunked the viral 2018 assertion that Soros paid the Honduran migrant caravan, and ADL's review of millions of tweets found Soros-funding allegations about the 2020 protests were evidence-free recycling of older memes. Soros's actual philanthropy (Open Society Foundations) is publicly documented and audited. The ADL's analysis shows the trope's mechanics are inherited rather than new: it transfers the nineteenth-century Rothschild myth — a single Jewish financier secretly controlling governments — onto a living person, and reproduces the Protocols of the Elders of Zion's fiction of a Jewish master-plan behind migration and unrest. The Hungarian campaign demonstrates the slippage from 'criticism of a billionaire' to state-sponsored antisemitic imagery: Human Rights Watch documented the WWII-echoing poster aesthetics and the antisemitic vandalism the campaign invited. The trope's lethality is documented — Robert Bowers reposted Soros-caravan material before murdering 11 Jews in Pittsburgh — making clear that 'Soros' functions in extremist discourse as a thin code word for 'the Jews.'
